Ma belle créature,

Recevé ma salutation et la salutation de mes amis de la Republique Démocratique du Congo.

It is indeed true that there are stories within stories, whispered in the quiet of the night, shouted above the roar of the day, and played about between lovers, enemies, strangers, and friends. But all are fragile things made of just 26 letters arranged and rearranged.

When I met and became friends with the meek and funny D.K, my 30 year old new friend from Ituri City, Bunia District, Kisangani Province, Democratic Republic of God who calls me a big man and cannot believe I am 23, I was challenged. By talking to him, I had to help him improve his English as he awed me with his French.

Last night (Thursday, December 12, 2013) as we enjoyed an English movie that sugarcoats a sad German story – the mistreatment and burning of Jews in Nazi Camps – The Boy With striped Pajamas, I, not him,  of course, listened to a soundtrack that reminded me of what has now become somewhat my weekly obligation to you my dear, one from which I derive considerable gratification;

“…You have got to smile as the days go by,
I will write day to day just to say how much I love you…”

Later, I told him I have a friend of mine that I would write to in English so simple that he would translate for her as she knows French
He was excited and enthusiastically promised to play around, arrange and rearrange only 26 letters in order to make a few pages for your reading pleasure.

It was complicated. I had to find help from a Kenyan buddy, David, to translate to swahili first for him to appreciate the message and then write it down in decent francais. Eventually, due to other engagements and an impropmtu trip to Nairobi for David, we never finshed. All I have left are a few sentences of an illegible handwriting and my original piece which I hereby share with you.

And when he saw a photo of you and I at our first Blankets and Wine, he reminded me of what I know already: you are beautiful. I told him it is the basic reason I am so proud of you.

But having come here to put a star in starting over, I have learnt so many things including but not limited to the fact that admiring someone does not mean that you love them. Thankfully, for me, I love you not only because of your looks and disposition, but also because of your kind mind. You are in one word: amazing.

As you noticed at B&W, it was not the opportune moment to share with you as I had hoped and planned to. And no, it was not my shy bones. With the benefit of hindsight, I also vividly recall that we even never did simple things like toasting. There will be enough time for those.

Being the private person that I want to be, I will keep K away from all this and pray that we will find some time together when I return to K next week. I cannot help but wait.

Stay well my friend, and may God bless you abundantly.
